Dean, Skippy (Dan) and Nan
From Dan Hyde’s sister Nan about Dan. This story happened in the late 1940s when Nan was age 6 and Dan’s brother Dean was age 5.
I don’t know if I ever told you that when you reached the crawling stage and Mom didn’t own a vacuum cleaner ( 3-4 Times a year she would rent one from Vic Blood’s furniture store in LeRoy, NY), she would have Dean and me go over the carpet on our hands and knees and “pick the carpet.” We would crawl around with a toy dump truck and try to pick up every tiny bit of trash. If we missed one piece you’d be sure to find it and pop it into your mouth.
In the winter she would bring in a dust pan of fresh dry snow, throw it on the rug, and sweep with a broom real fast before it melted. The snow gathered up the dust and bits of debris and freshened the carpet.
That little memory popped to the top of my head the other day and was so vivid. I think it was brought to my mind as I was picking up loose threads from Deb sewing costumes for the school play Elf, that probably won’t be on the school stage since school and everything else has been cancelled until further notice.
