Jake when he was little was content to suck his thumb.
Mom and Dad moved to Clarksburg, WVa in my second half of 6th Grade -Quincy St., Broad Oaks. I remember my Dad coming home on payday. My brothers and sisters & I would each get 10 cents. We had little to wear and to eat but we were all happy.
When it rained hard, my brother, sisters and I loved to make mud dams and play in the rain. Our mother worked hard washing, cooking and taking care of the kids.
There was a marble factory in Bridgeport. (Correction: This was probably the Arko marble factory located in Clarksburg instead of Bridgeport, WV – Nancy Jackson) My brothers would go and get marbles-big cat eyes-steelies etc. My brothers shared some with me.
Jake & my others brothers made wooden guns and shot rubber bands playing with their friends-Cowboys and Indians. (Note: I remember wooden sling shots with a rubber band. – Nancy Jackson.)
Jake had a bb gun and shot through Mr. Hammond’s front window. A bb got Jake once-I think his finger. Jake and my other brothers had American Flyer sleds. I got to ride one some.
Jake and my other brothers and friends’ favorite swimming hole was Center Branch and Willow beach.
Mom said that if it hadn’t been for Jake and my other brothers delivering papers we wouldn’t have had food on the table. (Note: My Dad died in 1936 before Social Security started. – Nancy Jackson)
I have the best brothers and sisters in the World and I thank God for each one.
